| Character's Name |
Ibrahim Nasar |
| Role in Plot |
Ibrahim Nasar is the father of Santiago Nasar (protagonist). Ibrahim plays the role of a father figure, though he is dead in the story. He had an affair with Victoria Guzman, the family cook, when she was younger. Santiago Nasar resembles his father in many ways. Ibrahim Nasar taught Santiago all about falconry and firearms. Santiago Nasar behaves in a very brusque manner (e.g. barbarically handling women). All of Santiago's traits appear to be very masculine and rough: his treating of women, loving of firearms, skills in falconry, etc... And all these behavioral aspects and traits all seem to stem from his father, Ibrahim. Ibrahim doesn't play a major role in the plot, but his role as a father may explain Santiago's personality. |
| Significance of Name in Work |
The name "Ibrahim Nasar" may relate to the bible character of "Abraham". The name "Abraham: means: "the father of multitude". In the bible, Abraham is known as the father of Israel and is celebrated for his great faith in the old testament. This possible allusion to the Abraham in the bible actually contrasts the Ibrahim in the novel The Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Ibrahim is a very unfaithful character and is also "the father of multitude", but in a way differing from Abraham in the bible. The name "Ibrahim" may be an allusion to "Abraham", but the characters are almost nothing alike. |
